Verizon's VoIP ready South African Network. In January 2003, Verizon South Africa became the first service provider in Southern Africa to offer Internet access via fibre optic network as a standard service to over 70% of its customer base. This recent network upgrade means Verizon SA now offers the fastest Internet access possible in South Africa. The Verizon backbone is supported by an ATM STM-1 core - the highest speed interface that Telkom can deliver. Whether it's from New York to Johannesburg or simply from your server to another point within Verizon's data centre - Verizon ensures maximum speeds and efficiency to and from every possible point. The Verizon South Africa Network From Verizon's birth as the first commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) in South Africa over eleven years ago, they have gone from dial-up access leaders (Internet Africa) to leaders in Internet-based network services, including dedicated Internet access, Web and server hosting, security and integrated communication solutions for both customers in South African and beyond our borders in Africa. In a world where electronic communication now determines the dynamics of business, the reliability and availability of data networks has become critical. Information has to move effectively and arrive safely, and downtime needs to be eliminated. Verizon has built a rigorously engineered network covering South Africa, which extends into Africa and the rest of the world. Verizon's advanced Network Management Systems and Network Operation Centre (NOC) proactively monitor and maintain this vast network, ensuring that customers receive a consistent, high quality, reliable service. The National Backbone Verizon South Africa, forming part of the Verizon global network, is built on a layered principle, and consists of a transmission, core, gateway and access layer. The transmission layer is has recently been changed from an ATM layer, provided and managed by Verizon to Telkom SA's ATM network. The move to Telkom's ATM network will guarantee high availability of bandwidth with redundancy offered by in Telkom's core and diverse fibre routes into all Verizon network nodes. Furthermore, this network will ensure the very rapid delivery of bandwidth to meet any unexpected growth in demand. Verizon has core nodes in South Africa's two major centre - Cape Town and Johannesburg - and nodes in all other major South African centres. Verizon has deployed Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) across the entire network backbone. MPLS traffic engineering allows us to optimise network resource utilisation and traffic performance thereby allowing the ability to control specific routes across the network to reduce congestion and improve the cost and efficiency of carrying IP traffic. MPLS will enable us to deliver third generation network services to our customers who require specific Quality of Service (QoS) based on anything from cost of service to IP application service requirements. This backbone currently provides connectivity to over 1000 companies. Additional network services include Server and Application Hosting Facilities for Application Service Provider's (ASPs), Domain Name Services (DNS), Mail Services (such as, SMTP and POP3), traffic management and engineering services, router configuration, and extensive server and services monitoring. Particular attention is paid to monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to ensure that the service provided by Verizon consistently meets our commitments and exceeds our customers' expectations. Pan-African Internet Service Provider, Africa Online and Verizon South Africa have formed a joint venture company to provide first class Internet-based network services to the African continent. Verizon currently has a presence in Kenya, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana and using agents, resellers and business partners is planning to expand into Uganda, Tanzania, Angola and Mauritius. |
